Shand is a small independent British bicycle company located in Scotland, fabricating hand-built production bikes here in the UK as well as designing and supplying carbon fibre bikes manufactured by our partners.
Started in 2003 by Steven Shand, Shand originally focussed on one-off made-to-order frames, mostly drop-bar off-road bikes but 'cross bikes, mountain bikes and road bikes too. Originally Steven worked on his own but in attempt to grow the capacity of the business and increase output, the company was relaunched in 2011 in partnership with Russell Stout. This relaunch coincided with a move to larger premises, additions to the team, investment in tooling and the development of a production bike range, hand-made alongside our custom builds. As of 2016 Shand are also deeply involved with the design and manufacture of bicycles using material other than steel
Every steel Shand bike begins and ends its production life in our workshop. We deal with the raw tubing from our suppliers, frames are welded and tested and then painted in-house. Our carbon fibre models are designed here in Scotland and manufactured by our partner factory in Asia. All carbon frames are inspected and painted alongside our steel bikes here in our workshop. The final step is assembly using quality components before being test-ridden and sent to the customer.
All of us at Shand are passionate about bikes and cycling. Commuting, racing, touring, it doesn't matter, it's all good.
Having run an independent workshop building custom frames and bicycles since 2003, Steven is passionate for all things bike and has been involved in the cycling and outdoor industry for over 20 years, working with some of the biggest brands.
Despite this, he’s still passionate about riding and for the price of a pint of 80/- will tell you about his sponsored debut on the mountain bike race scene way back in 1991.
Inevitably falling into road cycling and mountain biking after an unhealthy addiction to fell and ultra running, Russell has always been involved with cycling in one way or another along with innovative product design and production.
He comes to Shand after 20 years in design and communications and is responsible for paint production and custom paint designs. He can also be found competing in mountain bike and cyclocross races around the country.
Matt has always been involved with making, fixing and biking having grown up around workshops and racing motorcycles.
His interest in bicycle design and manufacture grew while studying product design at university and was helped on by a love of mountain biking.
With his design, fabrication and biking background, it seems to make sense that he now finds himself building frames. Matt one day hopes to join a circus but luckily for us, he seems content at the moment building bikes.
A newcomer to bicycle manufacturing after escaping a career in IT, Euan has a passion for quality bikes that naturally drew him to Shand.
At times his interest in bikes seems superseded only by bright cycling shoes, he likes the adventure of riding down that lane you normally pass and think "next time I'll see where that goes". Just the type of journey that can be made on a Shand.
Fraser comes to Shand after many years of working in the cycle trade, leaving the retail front after managing a store in Edinburgh.
Working in Bike shops essentially since high school, albiet with a brief hiatus at University for some History and Mechanical Engineering, he has a serious addiction to bicycles and more importantly riding bikes!
Fraser's graduated from BMX to mountain bikes and now includes (gasp) road / ‘gravel’ , or should that be called randonneuring? (no! Ed) As long as he's out on a bike, he's happy!
