Salsa Mukluk

Salsa have just announced the Mukluk, a production snow bike. I know that Surly have had the Pugsley for a while but is there really the demand for something this niche from a major production company? It’ll be interessting to see how it sells.

Both Surly and Salsa are owned by Quality Bicycle Products, so I guess they would be the best ones to know whether there is a market for these things!
I did ask a Surly employee at the European Singlespeed Champs back in 2007 how many Pugsleys they were selling and he said it was more than I would expect.

I work for a Surly and Salsa dealer in Sydney Australia, and am always surprised how much demand we get for Pugsleys…. I have ridden one a bit and loved it, though thought it a little portly…. I am in love with the Mukluk, and very much looking forward to trying one

I’ve waited all year for the unveiling of the Mukluk. Hopeful it will be priced in a reasonable range providing the hard core winter commuters of Minnesota with a truly all winter bicycle.

  4. I recently bought a Pugsley, with Rohloff gears: just what I have been looking for for wilderness expeditioning. Surprisingly bouncy to ride, awesome traction and stability. I think that there will be an enduring and robust niche market for fat bikes both for sport and for expeditions.

I think there is a future for fat bikes but I just don’t think it’s a big one. While most people will replace their race/xc/downhill/cross bike every couple of years, I don’t see the same think happening for fat bikes. This will mean sales will look ok to begin with but will taper and won’t be a big growth sector.

Of course if I’m wrong, look out for a Shand Fat sometime soon!
